How to equip something to your off-hand

The off-hand slot is highlighted on the bottom-right corner of the player avatar.
In the inventory, there is a slot on the bottom-right side of the player avatar that looks like an outline of a shield. This is called the off-hand slot. When you put something in it, you should see it being held on your off-hand (your left hand on default). Your other hand should also appear on the screen in first person view (you should see two hands on the screen). You should also see an extra slot with the off-hand item appear beside your HUD hotbar; this should be on the opposite side of your main hand.

For easy equipping to the off-hand slot, press F by default. This is configurable in the Controls settings. Using this, you can quickly equip something into your off-hand slot in your inventory and switch between the items in your hotbar and off-hand. Practice using this key until you are able to fluently swap between items in your hotbar and your off-hand.

The given tutorial works only in Minecraft Java Edition. The conditions are not same in Minecraft W10 Edition. I can't hold Shield or a Map in offhand unlike Java Edition. Why is it so???
Also when will next update release??

Same here.  Not being able to hold anything but the map and a shield in the alternate hand is no bueno, amigos.   And it turns out that even though you can hold the shield, you can't block with it.

You have to crouch to be able to block with the shield

i cant hold a torch in my off hand i cant have my pic axe out and have no torch in my off hand and when i try i cant

You can block with it man. You just use crouch. (Dont ask me why you cant just right click to put it up :P)

i am not able to use off hand in minecraft windows 10 edition when i am taking the torch to the shield mark i am doing right click and left click it is not equipping the torch and where is the controls thing in minecraft windows 10
