Window tint may have to be removed for a variety of reasons.

Since tint doesn't last forever, it can start to look dull, dingy or may even start to peel.  Some owners may even choose to remove window tint because they simply don't want it anymore or because they are breaking the law.

How much does window tint removal cost?

The cost of removing window tint will depend on how it's going to be removed, the amount of tint, if a professional is involved and where you live.On average, plan on spending about $100 to $225 to remove all of the tint on your car.  By the window, it should be in the $25 to $50 range.

If you were to do the job on your own, however, the costs could be as little as $10, depending on the product you purchase.  The cheapest away, according to our research, is simply with some water, a small scraper, fine steel wool and a special blend of dishwashing detergent

According to professionals on TintDude.com, one professional said he would charge $30 to $35 per window, but the back window would be about $75 to $90 in New York City, while another professional said they would charge $60 per hour, with a minimum hour commitment.

Window tint removal overview

During the removal process, a common method will include lifting the corners with a blade, just enough so that the tint can be peeled away.  Grasping and peeling the tint away, most of the tint will peel; however, in some events, pieces may stick in spotty areas.  Next, a simple soapy or ammonia mixture, mixed with water, will be placed inside a spray bottle and the entire window will be sprayed on any remaining residue.  This residue will then be carefully scraped from the glass with a razor blade, keeping it moist in the meantime to prevent any damage.   Some professionals, however, may avoid using the razor blade due to the damage it may cause.  Once removed, the window will be cleaned with a glass cleaner and dried.

Another popular method professionals use will be via a fabric steamer.  With this method, the steamer will be filled with water, and the steam will be used near the corners, just enough to loosen it away from the glass.  The tint, like the first method, will be peeled away, and the remaining residue, instead of being washed with a soapy mixture, will be blasted with steam instead.

The average four-door sedan will take up to two hours to complete if a professional were to do the job.

Removing tint actually isn't that hard of a job.  With a few tools and various materials, tint can be removed in less than three hours, but make sure you do your homework first.  When removing the tint with a scraper, you can scratch your window if you're not careful enough.  The same can be said about the circuits leading to the defroster or radio antenna.  If you were to damage these circuits, it could lead to repair costlier than you would have paid a professional in the first place.  YourMechanic, for instance, has a guide showing you exactly how tint can be removed.  There are products available that can make it easier to remove the tint, costing as little as $5  For example, this popular spray is available online that costs less than $10.
